Today we are bringing you the work of Jessica Nelson. Jessica is a wildlife photographer from Maryland. We love her creative compositions of wildlife subjects. Her work is simply stunning! The color and details are unreal. You can find her on IG at @gagglephotog
I started like most moms, to take better photos of my children. I quickly figured out that shooting people wasn’t my cup of tea so I turned my passion onto wildlife and nature. I’ve never regretted this decision and I find that the more I learn about wildlife, wildlife photography and conservation the more it fuels my passion.
I love this photo of a baby green heron that I took at my local lake. I was looking for the nest of babies when I went to the lake that day and was lucky enough to find them. This little one finally gave me a good view when he ventured out onto a branch and sat in some pretty light.
Birds are my favorite. While I love all wildlife, I find that I love learning about and shooting as many birds as I can.
Alaska. Last summer we were lucky enough to have taken a cruise from Seattle up through the inside passage and into Alaska. It was so amazingly beautiful there with the mountains and ocean. It was just breathtaking and hard to capture its beauty.
I am going to say Alaska again here. I can’t describe how gorgeous the scenery was there I know my photos didn’t do it justice. I saw whales and sea lions and seals, but the most amazing thing about Alaska is its landscapes.
I have two places on my must-see list, Hawaii and Australia. I want to go to both places for mostly the same reason, I want to see birds that live there. Hawaii has the most amazing wildlife that live on the islands and I would just love to be able to capture them. Australia also has a very unique ecosystem with some interesting birds and wildlife. I would be thrilled to be able to see both places.
I am going to be in Jackson Hole/Teton National park at the end of June for some landscape work. Then I plan to drive through Yellowstone following that. I also like to take a trip to the Maryland eastern shore to do a little birding in early August. Then at the end of August I will be in the Dominican Republic looking for some exotic birds.
Wildlife photography takes a lot of patience and observation. Learn to observe with all of your senses so that you can be successful in finding and capturing the animals that live all around us.
I work full time in the technology sector as a program manager and engineer. I also have three kids that keep me very busy as well.
While I am a very shy and introverted person, I prefer being alone instead of in social settings, my favorite type of music is heavy metal.
I have a long list of photography goals that amount to checking off certain types of wildlife I would love to capture. Of course, that list would take me around the globe so I guess I better start saving my pennies.
I teach an online photography class on wildlife but I would love to consider an in-person retreat for wildlife and nature. I may consider hosting that one day soon.
If you were shipwrecked on an island but had all your human needs (food, water, clothing) what two items would you take with you?
My birding gear and my laptop.
