I am not going to lie, I get a little giddy when I wake up and check my phone and see that one of my images have been featured. See that image above? National Geographic featured it on their website AND their Instagram account…I about passed out with excitement when that happened. I have had great success getting my images featured not only on Instagram but also on websites, and magazines. I am going to cover Instagram in this post though.
Today I am going to tell you about why you should get your images featured, tune in tomorrow for the how. There are many benefits to getting your images featured.
Followers – Every time an image of mine gets featured, I gain followers. These are the best type of followers to gain, they are coming to you because they like your work. They are more likely to engage with your content and stick around.
Street Cred – Obviously if your work is being featured, you know what you are doing! Make sure to add your IG features to your stories and your site. I have a “featured” story highlights where I showcase my favorite features. Instagram features look great on your website and to potential clients.
Other Features – Having your images featured on Instagram can lead to other features. Midwest Living Magazine found me on Instagram, they have featured a couple of my images now. After those features they contacted me about using my images in their magazine. It can also lead to websites wanting to publish your images on their site. These are usually paid opportunities.
Brand Endorsements – If you tagged a company in your image and they like it, they may reach out to you for a brand endorsement. This could mean free gear and paid posts!
Influencer Opportunities – How does getting paid to post images on IG sound? Pretty awesome, right.? I have had several influencer agencies reach out to me through Instagram. If your images are featured it looks really good to influencer companies.
Local Business – I live in the frozen tundra that is Minnesota. I make sure to tag my images with Minnesota tags. Because of that my work is often featured by Minnesota accounts, and that is amazing free publicity. My Instagram account is tied to my portrait business, so if people visit my account they see that I also run a portrait business.
More Exposure – When accounts feature your work, more people will see it! If the account that features your work has a higher follower count than you, you will rank higher for hashtags and locations that they add to the post.
In example, the Glacier National Park Instagram account featured this image. They then added their own set of tags and a different location than I used. I am now ranking 3rd for the hashtag #visitmt, and I didn’t even add that hashtag to my own post! I am also ranking first for the location they used. People check hashtags and locations all the time, if people see your images and love them they will follow you!
Tune in tomorrow for HOW to get your images featured.
Make sure you are tagging your images #womentravelphotographers .
